An update long overdue

December 11th, 2011 (06:14 pm)

Current mood: calm

I don't even want to check the last time I updated–it's been so long.

My year of intensive studying is over, I passed the national exam for all the sixth year med students (and had to retake one of the tests twice), was ranked better than what I expected (and better than what I had done during the year) which allowed me to choose what specialty I'd do. After a lot of hesitation, I chose family medicine.

I've officially been an intern for a month now. I don't know how much I've progressed since, but I still feel like I know nothing. I'm working in the ER for six months, and luckily everyone there, from the doctors to the nurses and cleaning ladies are really nice. It's a good thing too because the ER is not a place I want to work at later on, but the internship is mandatory.

How has everyone else been?

Self satisfied squeeing–feel free to disregard

January 4th, 2011 (09:47 pm)

Current mood: happy
Current song: That don't impress me much, Shania Twain (on the radio this morning)

I just had the results of a practice exam (one I took in December during a week end, Saturday and Sunday morning and afternoon), and I did pretty well. There were students from all over France taking that exam, and I was 1368th out of 4773!

I took this because at the end of the year, all the 6th year med students of France take a national exam, and depending on the rank, you get to choose your specialty and where you'll be an intern. So, right now I'm in the first third which is pretty good, even if it won't get me the very demanded specialties. I'll have to work harder for that, if I want to do them!

I'm really happy, but a little worried because usually when I get good grades I start working less and that's something I absolutely should not do. Hopefully, I'll do as well for the next practice exams (and the real one too).

Happy New Year!

January 2nd, 2011 (01:59 pm)

Current mood: amused
Current song: I'm not calling you a liar, florence + the machine

I hope everyone had great holidays. Welcome to all the new people!

Vacation was great–I went to Burgundy with all the family, and had a very nice Christmas. And for once, we had snow on Christmas day! I have been fantasizing about this since I was a kid, and I'm still extremely satisfied. The snow is melting now, unfortunately, just before I have to go back to work again.

Today is the epiphany, and in France at least, we have a special kind of cake, called "frangipane" in which a small figurine is hidden, and the person who has the slice with it the king or queen. This year, I was the queen!

Once the king/queen is crowned, the joke is to scream "le roi boit" (the king drinks) or "la reine boit" very loud and fast and over again when the king/queen is drinking, to try and get him to stop drinking. Now, my father gets startled easily, but this time jumped so much when the rest of the family started screaming, that I inhaled the water I was drinking. They won this time, I stopped. :)

Anyway, how was every one's holidays?

Snow day!

First of December, and first real snow day of the season! Best of all, I was stuck at home and still felt enough like a kid to be happy about it. The only thing is that we had to clear up the driveway twice today, because it snowed so much.

Everything should be back to normal tomorrow (sighh)…

In other news, I went to see Deathly Hallows this week end!

Current mood: sore

Well, it's a practice exam but still, I'm procrastinating on LJ instead of working. Anticoagulants are a boring thing to learn, by the way.

I snagged this from leopion.

Have you read more than 6 of these books? The BBC believes most people will have read only 6 of the 100 books listed here.

This was written originally for the dramione_awards Special Challenge, and in a classic move on my part, I managed to forget the deadline, wanting to revise it one last time.

Anyway, I thought about posting it for a while, but then the other day [personal profile] musyc said she needed distractions for today, so instead of postponing this forever, I'm posting it now. So here it is, my would-be Special Challenge drabble.

I hate being sick

September 20th, 2010 (09:16 pm)

Current mood: sick

This is the third day I've had this cold, and I thought it was getting better, but that was too much to ask, wasn't it? I had a headache all afternoon, and I had class from six PM to ten PM, but only stayed for two hours.

On the bright side, I wasn't feeling too bad this morning, and this is my week in the biology labs. So today, I was in the parasitology lab, where I saw the bug that causes malaria, fungi and lots of other fun little stuff. The interns showing us around were really nice and spent a lot of time explaining. I can't wait for tomorrow (especially if it means my symptoms will get better).

I'm slowly catching up on the Reverse Challenge on Hawthorn & Vine, and there really are some amazing entries.

I hope everyone's feeling okay, and I'll be going to sleep now.

… but there are new fics for Hawthorn & Vine's Reverse Challenge everyday, and so I half read them/half read my lessons. Starting dermatology now, and I've got a feeling it's not going to be pleasant.

My favorites so far are:

Ningloreth's manip. It's really pretty, and gives a feeling of intimacy and worry that are intriguing.

Dirty Little Secrets by eilonwy1. It's real creepy, but very well written. I love Draco and Hermione's changing relationship, and the mystery.

The Beginning by ningloreth. The characters seem OOC in the beginning, but the twist was completely unexpected. Completely worth the read!

I'm starting to read Days Without Rain by liafic. Another mystery (apparently, that genre is my favorite for this challenge), well written, that has you guessing every chapter. Who is cursed? Who is guilty? Who is being manipulated?

In completely unrelated news, the motor to open and close the window in my car is broken, so it'll have to go to the garage on Monday. The window is blocked wide open, and it's supposed to rain this evening … Oh, joy.

Current mood: busy

I finally decided to sign up for the dramione_awards Special Challenge. I usually don't dare sign up for anything that has a deadline, because I'm so terrified of them. I've never really written for anyone else but me, and I like being free to go at a leisurely pace, especially if I'm not feeling particularly inspired.

I didn't really have an excuse here, since the maximum length is a 1,000 words, and it's not an exchange. And I've already written something, which I have to go back to and edit. So, no pressure anymore!

In work-related news, I love my internship in infectious diseases, but I have so much to learn and antibiotics are a pain to remember. It's starting to seep slowly through my brain, though. I also have to start to study much more seriously and intensely than I did last year, because of the exam in June, which determines what specialty I can choose and where I'm going to study. But it's so hard to get to work and stay working!

Back from vacation

August 12th, 2010 (07:46 pm)

Current mood: busy

Well, it's almost been two weeks now, but given my habit of procrastinating, I'm only posting now.

Since the beginning of August, I've started a new internship in infectious diseases, which is pretty interesting, with the doctors always asking us questions and explaining stuff to us. Hopefully, I'll master antibiotics by the end of it. On the downside, there's a lot of administrative work, because the patients need a lot of exams to try to figure out what they have, how their condition is evolving.

Back to the important (or at least, the most fun part): vacation! With my family, we went back to California for a month, visited family and friends. We stayed in the Bay Area, visited my father's uncle in Southern California, and finished in Lake Tahoe, the best place in the world (to me at least).

Photos are under the cutCollapse )

You're used to it by now

July 4th, 2010 (10:40 pm)

Current mood: excited

Seeing as I post so sporadically, I feel I almost don't need to say sorry for the late update, as you're probably not expecting anything sooner.

Anyway, this will just be a quick post because I really need to go to bed after staying up late last night.

First of all, my best friend got married yesterday! Everything was pretty wonderful: the mass, the reception, and of course, the bride and groom. I'm sooo happy but it also feels so strange to think that my friend is now a "Mrs."

I finished my exams last week, and my results will come out mid-July probably. I don't know if they went well or not, because usually, when I get out of an exam I have a feeling things went well until I speak about it with friends and then I believe I failed everything. To avoid useless stress, I don't discuss my exams any more to stay on my first impression, but it's not really representative of what I actually did.

And last, I'm going to the States in two days! Every two years, I go back there with my family, and I just can't wait! We'll be traveling across California for three and a half weeks (well, I'll come back home after three and a half weeks while the rest stay for a few days more). As a consequence, my updates will probably be even more sporadic, as I don't know when and where I'll have internet access.

I hope everyone is having a good time and can take vacations this summer!

Current mood: excited

I should be studying. Really, I should. I even have my lessons right next to me in front of the television, and instead, I'm watching England/USA. What can I say, the match is just so much more interesting than France/Uruguay yesterday. I guess that's the advantage of supporting two teams: you can choose one or the other depending on whose doing best!

As you might have guessed with the beginning of this post, I have exams very soon, so I'm not very active on LJ. (Not that I'm ever). I'll try to do better in two weeks, when they're all over.

To finish this super short post, happy birthday atalanta84!

Birthdays and Births

Current mood: happy

I meant to post earlier than this but it's my nature to postpone, so well.

First of all, thank you silvia_elisa for her birthday post. It made me so, so happy!

I turned twenty-three last week, and according to Lydia Bennet I am now officially an old maid. Ha! I had a nice dinner with the family, and am trying (though not very hard) to invite some friends over next Saturday. Upcoming exams don't make me extremely enthusiastic.

Since last week, I've been in my "official" unit, that is the neonatal ICU. So far, I like it pretty much, but I think it's mainly due to the fact that I love babies so much, because there isn't that much to do. I could examine some babies, but they were mostly babies that weren't premature.

Premature babies are freaky. They're sort of cute, sometimes, but they are so tiny, they don't fold their arms and legs like other babies do. Their skin is wrinkled and they are just so, so small! Babies that are born at the right time seem huge in comparison!

Laura [userpic]

First week in pediatrics

May 8th, 2010 (03:32 pm)

So this was the first week of my new internship in pediatrics. I started with a week of afternoons in the pediatric ER (otherwise, my more "permanent" internship is in the neonatal ICU, where premature babies are taken care of).

I thought the week would be hectic and awful, but most of the patients who arrived at the ER were there on their doctor's advice, so there weren't that many unjustified reasons (as in: "my shoulder has been hurting for two years so I'll come to the ER on a Sunday", which actually happened to me). Luckily, I took care of children that were mostly in good shape, so the babies were cute and smiling, and the older kids very nice.

Anyway, I'm really excited about this internship in pediatrics, and I hope it'll help me choose (or rule out) one career possibility for me.

On a completely different topic, today is a holiday in France in memory of the WWII armistice. And yes, we are snobs, because WWII ends in May for us and we conveniently forget most of the times that it went on in the Pacific until August. But hey, I won't complain when school's out every year on the eighth of May! It's quite amazing, though, how the world has changed since then. Hopefully, it will continue to change for the better. I need positive thoughts in the middle of the economic crisis!

And finally, happy birthday amethyst18!!!!

Current mood: satisfied

More than a month since my last post, actually. I haven't really been in the mood to post anything, though I have been looking at my friends page, so I sort of know what's happening for all of you.

The important news for me is my grandfather's passing at the end of March, after long years and particularly these past months of illness. I truly believe he's in a better place now, but it still was hard for us. My mother and grandmother are holding up okay, but we're still sort of wondering when or if they're going to break down. My grandmother, in particular, was exhausted after taking care of my grandfather for such a long time.

On less depressing news, I've just finished my internship in the ICU, and all in all, I'm really happy with those three months. It was sometimes very hard, because for the first time in my life I sort of identified some patients with people I knew and it was very disturbing, but it was really interesting and we all got along very well. I'll be starting pediatrics tomorrow and I wonder how that's going to go.

Other than that, my sister's Canadian exchange partner is going back home tomorrow, after three months here. It was great fun to have her, and she was really nice. It's going to be strange to have the house back to the family only.

I hope everyone is okay and had a nice spring break (it's around this time of the year, isn't it?).

Snow shoeing

February 15th, 2010 (09:25 am)

Current location: France, Bernin
Current mood: chipper
Current song: None, which is quite unusual

I am aware this post's main goal is to show off pictures I took on Saturday while snow shoeing. I know, it's bad, but the view was so spectacular I just had to share!

Anyway, on Saturday I spent the day with my best friend, her fiancé and all those who will be witnesses at their wedding, to get to know each other. We went snow shoeing for the better part of the day, watched part of a rugby match (France destroyed Ireland, by the way), made crèpes for dinner and then played a custom made board game about my friend and her fiancé, girls against boys (girls won!)

The hike was pretty great, except that I was very slow, as I'm not at all in shape. Not that I'm ever in shape, so I was prepared for lagging behind. Luckily, I wasn't alone, there was another girl who was in worse shape, and we kept each other company. We started out in the clouds, but after an hour or so we had walked high enough to be above them, and then … The view is just breathtaking!

First week in the ICU

February 10th, 2010 (11:55 am)

Current mood: blank

So last week was the first of my new internship in the ICU.

And let's just say: I knew the death toll would be higher, but not quite as much. We started the internship by seeing people crying because their loved one was going to die, and I'm glad I have worked in the hospital for a year, because there was a student with us for whom it was her first day.

The particular unit I am is interesting, but can also be incredibly boring. Sometimes, there is just nothing to do, especially if you work in the afternoon, and you just sit there and watch the time pass by. Or try to study, but I'm never very efficient. When there is stuff to do though, I love it! On Wednesday, I did CPR for the first time (with real doctors and nurses all around, so it wasn't too scary as being alone in the middle of nowhere).

There are so many students in the hospital now that we have to take turns to come in the unit, and this is my week off! I'm trying to study for an exam on Thursday, but abysmally failing! That is, I'm going very, very slowly. Hopefully that'll be enough when the day comes.

Today my sister's Canadian pen pal is arriving, and she'll be staying at our place for three months. We're going to have to make efforts to speak French with our father, so she can learn to speak the language. It's going to be tough. I always speak English with my father, and when I have to use French, I find it incredibly awkward.

Oh well, at least we'll still be able to watch movies in English. I don't want to even think of the torture it would have been if we had to be subjected to movies dubbed in French. I'm completely spoiled as far as movies go!

Anyway, have a great week everyone!

New Beginning

Current mood: determined
Current song: In My Arms, Mylo

Today was the first day of my new internship. I'll be working in the cardiology ICU for the next three months. This particular unit doesn't have the reputation of being very interesting for med students, but I'm determined to learn as much as I can. Besides, I love cardiology and I'm intrigued by the ICU, so it should be an interesting mix!

The downside is that the death toll in these kind of units is dramatically higher than in the conventional units. Today, when we entered the unit, we were greeted by people wailing and crying. Not exactly the best way to start an internship.

On a completely unrelated note, the whole family went to see "Up in the Air" yesterday, and it was pretty cool! You go from laughing to crying in less than a second, it's quite startling. The acting, the script and the story were great. The only problem I had with it was the French title. Instead of translating it, they decided to call it "In the Air". You know, as if four consecutive words in English is just too much to handle. I'll never get it…
